Preface

Like wind sweeping across the continents;
We may feel it's presence and observe it's effects,
yet we fail to see what's right in front of our face…

Every journey encapsulates a point of origin from which the genesis of a saga originates.  The origin of this story occurs during the worst conflict of the twentieth century – World War II.  That event created carnage which will never be erased from this earth.  Even today, over seventy years later, walking the streets of Europe can reveal unmistakable scars of war.  Including over sixty million lives extinguished from the face of this earth during a course of less then ten years.  The majority of those who survived the war formed an unbreakable bond forged by wholesale slaughter and the ability to somehow survive.  Connections formed by sight of death, loss of those held dear, absence of reason, were elements only they could understand.  Derived from this experience a key group of survivors swore this madness would never happen again.  Yet it did.  Witnessing the same types of darkness reemerging only a few years later, those with common ties sought each other out.  They began a campaign to right the wrongs they fought against, and in doing so, created events none of them could foresee.  This period is also the genesis of both the ‘Shadow Warriors’ and the ‘Dark Warriors’.  Associations forged from the baptism of fire and bonded by the horrors of war.  They formed factions that would dedicate their futures to the ones who paid the ultimate price.  Those survivors shared bonds forged from the strongest mettle that would never break.  This is the saga that continues to be shrouded in absolute secrecy and mystery to this day.  It's also the search for a father that began over forty years ago, shortly after he had to go away…

During WWII it became crystal clear to senior US personnel there was a need for some type of special operations group.  An autonomous outfit that was unto itself to tackle the problems not a good fit for other established organizations.  It would require a special intelligence branch, organizational skills and support for resistance movements, plus small teams of personnel for dedicated tasks such as assassination and sabotage.  Under direction of President Roosevelt the ‘Office of Strategic Services' (OSS) was formed in 1942.  Sadly though, as the war ended there appeared to be little want or need for such an organization and the OSS was disbanded in 1945.  After only two years, once again, it became abundantly clear a great void was formulating for the gathering and processing of foreign intelligence.  To fill this void the ‘Central Intelligence Agency' (CIA) was created.  It's main task is to be a central gathering and processing agency of foreign intelligence.  It’s secondary task was to take over ‘Dirty Operations’ that were carried out by OSS – This was titled ‘Special Activities Division’ (SAD).

When CIA first started, the initial challenge was to rapidly enlist talent able to fulfill it's mission.  Lack of trained officers and agents with experience was a monumental obstacle requiring the utmost expediency in resolving.  The obvious solution was to recruit as many of the former OSS members as possible to get up to speed immediately.  The search started straightaway with many former OSS members being hand picked by CIA to fill the void.  A number of other OSS personnel and their associated networks remained officially ‘outside’ of CIA but their expertise was tapped on an ‘as needed Consultant’ basis.  Hence, the beginnings of the CIAContractor’ role was initiated.  It fit perfectly into the way CIA is required to operate – with solid ‘plausible dependability at all times in any operation.  In other words, CIA fully understood well in advance activities would arise that mandated there could never be links between those special activities and CIA.  In this case key assets would be used on an ‘only as needed’ basis to carry out specific tasks CIA could never acknowledge.  This collection of assets who undertook operations on their own, or in conjunction with CIAContract officers’ (usually CIA Case Officers authorized to initiate contracts at their sole discretion), is commonly referred to as ‘Shadow Warriors’.  As the name implies, they work ‘in the shadows’ and out of sight from anyone not directly connected with an operation.  This phrase is well known and has been discussed a multitude of times when referring to CIA resources by authors, reporters and investigators.  Another term commonly used for these resources is CIASpooks’, which is normally applied by people outside the agency who work in a peripheral role often on the same project.  Whether referred to as ‘Shadow Warriors’ or CIASpooks’, the jest of both names are relevant; CIA operatives exhibiting a ‘shadowy’ or ‘spooky’ presence just by the nature of their persona.

What has not been openly discussed is an unknown companion group called ‘Dark Warriors’ which is as sinister as the name implies.  ‘Dark Warriors’ are those assets who do not exist – at least on paper – and never talked about except by the select few Shadow Warriors they directly coordinate with.  Even then, any conversation was usually in faded whispers as those conversations were always ‘lost to the wind’.  Missions they undertake never reach paper and are only hushed tones between a select few ‘Shadow Warriors’.  The communication between the two groups are conducted exclusively in person or by top secret encrypted systems whose code names themselves are even top secret.  There is never a traceable phone conversation or written note between them – they leave no trail to follow.  The higher ups at CIA do not want to know of the Dark Warrior existence or the Shadow Warrior's involvement with such assets.  These are resources hand picked and developed by the best of the best in the business.  Even more interesting is Shadow Warriors who work directly with Dark Warriors are purposely kept out of the spotlight and whose names are rarely mentioned in any CIA dispatches or memorandums.  The agency went to such great lengths in protecting Shadow Warriors who worked with Dark Warriors, that their names and operations rarely reached paper even when involved in other more standard activities.  The link between Shadow Warriors and  Dark Warriors is a closely held secret, protected at all costs.  Even if only Shadow Warriors were discovered to be involved in those operations, the damage could be linked to CIA and results devastating.  If association between CIA to Shadow Warriors was followed and pointed to Dark Warrior counterparts, the creation of US Senate investigative subcommittees would be initiated – and were.  In early 1975 the trail to at least one infamous Dark Warrior - My Father – was almost discovered.  This contributed to the formation of not one, but three separate subcommittees within three months – The Rockefeller Committee, The Pike Committee and the Church Committee.  Which explains why around this time numerous people died – either physically or by faking their own death.  Then they quietly relocated outside the USA never to be heard from again (See Table ‘C.’ below ).  The mantra is always ‘the dead can't talk...’ – especially to Senate Subcommittees.

Another name was developed for Dark Warriors in this specific instance.  Like the CIA Spooks tag previously mentioned for Shadow Warriors, the Dark Warriors were also known as ‘Gray Ghosts’.  There are several explanations that have been brought forward for this title.  One of them being Dark Warriors are ‘Ghosts’ who do not exist and operated in ‘very gray’ roles – as in the gray area that lays between the simple constructs of right and wrong.  Another is the coincidence that some of the most recluse members had a special attachment to the word ‘Gray’.

The groups known as Dark Warriors Gray Ghosts or Shadow Warriors is the focus of this writing.  The groups my father was a member of for most of his adult life was Dark Warrior or Gray Ghost and is the reason I wrote this story.  The group who left no trails to follow or documentation to find.  This is exactly why Dark Warriors were engaged; because they never really existed!!!

Table C. – List of Those Who Conveniently Died Just Before Testifying.

In January 1976:  House of Representatives Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) was formed to investigate JFK & MLK assassinations. Many witnesses conveniently die before they could be questioned, including 6 top FBI officials in a six month period in 1977. Committee issues 1979 report concluding that JFK was assassinated as a result of a conspiracy.

BUNCIN was activated in 12/1972.  The official purpose was to gather long-range strategic intelligence, covertly and carry out assassination sponsored by CIA under BNDD (later renamed DEA).  Many BUNCIN operators were Cuban anti-Castro assets.  Question is; if this list is near accurate how many could have been carried out by BUNCIN operators (notice a number were Mob, Castro affiliated, CIA, etc., whom BUNCIN was heavily involved with).

1.c.  August 7, 1976:  John Roselli, 71, mobster who testified to HSCA and was to do so again, but  found dismembered inside metal drum in Biscayne Bay, Florida.

2.c.  In January 1977; William D. Pawley, the former US Ambassador to Brazil who was connected to Anti-Castro Cubans and mafia figures died by shotgun before his testimony before the HSCA.

3.c.  March 29, 1977;  George DeMohrenschildt, 66, who was a close friend to Lee Harvey Oswald, CIA contract agent died of gunshot before scheduled HSCA testimony. In tape recording of his death, the burglar alarm is audible before the gunshot, indicating an intruder entered the home immediately before the shooting.

4.c.  March 1977;  Carlos Prio Soccaras, former Cuban President, money man for anti-Castro Cubans died of gunshot before scheduled HSCA testimony.

5.c.  March 29, 1977; Charles Nicoletti, 61, mobster connected with CIA assassination plots, died of gunshot before scheduled HSCA testimony.

6.c.  May 1977;  Lou Staples, Dallas radio Talk Show host who told friends he would break assassination case, died of a gunshot to head.

7.c.  June 1977;  Louis Nichols, former No. 3 man in FBI, worked on JFK assassination investigation, special assistant to J. Edgar Hoover and Hoover's liaison with the Warren Commission,  died of heart attack before scheduled HSCA testimony.

8.c.  August 1977;  Alan H. Belmont, FBI special assistant to Hoover who testified to the Warren Commission died after a long illness.  Given that Nichols and Belmont worked directly for Hoover, they both most likely knew that Hoover had hard evidence that the CIA had set up Lee Harvey Oswald as a patsy.  Which was why Hoover briefed Lyndon Johnson that he suspected the CIA was involved.

9.c.  August 1977;  James Cadigan who was a FBI document expert with access to documents that related to the death of John F. Kennedy and who testified to the Warren Commission, died due to a fall at his home before scheduled HSCA testimony.

10.c.  August 1977;   Joseph C. Ayres, chief steward on JFK's Air Force One, died in shooting accident.

11.c.  October 1977;  Donald Kaylor who was the FBI fingerprint expert who examined prints found at the assassination scene, died of heart attack before scheduled HSCA testimony.

12.c.  October 1977;  J.M. English who was the former head of FBI Forensic Sciences Laboratory where Lee Harvey Oswald's rifle & pistol were tested, died of heart attack before his scheduled HSCA testimony.

13.c.  November 9, 1977;  William C. Sullivan, 65, was the former number three boss at FBI, who headed Division 5, or  counter-espionage and domestic intelligence section.   He was shot in an alleged hunting accident shortly after his preliminary meeting with HSCA.

14.c.  November 18, 1978; Manuel Artime Buesa abruptly died of cancer in Miami before he was due to appear before the HSCA.

15.c. September 26, 1978;  John Paisley, the former CIA's Assistant Deputy Director of Office of Strategic Research, is found dead in Maryland's Patuxent River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, and his body was attached to diving weights and was shot in head. Police investigators described it as ‘an execution-type murder.’

Table D. – The CIA ‘Old Boy Network’.

List of suspected ‘back channel’ personnel.  All were WWII veterans.  Most also served in Laos and Vietnam around the same time.  This is the probable link from upper echelon to lower echelon CIA employees and operatives.  These men were all heroes and were on a personal first name basis with each other.  I dare say none of the transpired conversations were ever recorded and most meetings were of a clandestine nature.

The flow was most likely from higher, to mid-level, to ‘in the field’ assets.  The real connections were most likely cemented by the late1950's.  By around 1960 the back channels were fully open and unofficial operations were underway.  This is in effect the ‘Shadow Warrior’ to ‘Dark Warrior’ connection in which all that was communicated never made it into the infamous ‘Family Jewels’.

Table E. – CIA Assets:

1.e. William Egan Colby; Served in the U. S. Army during WWII with OSS in Europe.  High ranking CIA Officer serving in Laos and Vietnam.  Later promoted through the ranks as Director of CIA.

2.e. Theodore George ‘Ted’ Shackley; Known as ‘The Blonde Ghost’ was one of the most highly decorated CIA officers.  In charge of JM/WAVE in Miami from 1961 to 1966.  Appointed Chief of Station in Laos from 1966 to 1968 and then Saigon Station Chief from 1968 to 1972.  From 1972 to 1976 Shackley ran the CIA's ‘Western Hemisphere Division’.  Shackley took over the division with one main mission in mind; ‘regime change’ in Chile.  That project was code named FUBELT.  Appointed Associate Deputy Director for Operations, in charge of CIA covert operations in 1976.

3.e. Lucien Emile Conein; A U.S. Army officer during WWII and served in the OSS.  He was also a CIA Officer who served in Laos and Vietnam.  Would eventually be head of BUNCIN, CIA's way of transferring dirty operations and assassinations from CIA to BNDD (later renamed DEA).

4.e. Grayston ‘Gray’ Lynch; Served in the U. S. Army during WWII (D-Day, Battle of the Bulge) and Korea (Heartbreak Ridge).  Was in Laos and Vietnam in as U.S. Army Special Forces capacity.  Joined U.S. Army Special Forces in 1950 until 1960 when he joined CIA.  Initially assigned to JM/WAVE in Miami as a Paramilitary Trainer.  One of two CIA Contractors (along with Rip Robertson ) at the Bay of Pigs, Cuba, and who led the invasion while commanding the support ship the ‘Blagar’.  Given CIA's highest award for his role in the Bay of Pigs invasion.  Responsible for over 1,000 infiltration missions into Cuba and Latin America by CIA assets.  Personally made 113 infiltration's into Cuba during the 1960's.  Grayston operated mainly out of Key West and Tampa, FL.  Later recruited by Lucien Conien to join BUNCIN by early 1973.

5.e. William ‘Rip’ Robertson; A U.S. Marine Captain who served in the Pacific theater during WWII.  Rip joined CIA in 1947 as a Paramilitary Operations Officer in their famed Special Activities Division (SAD).  Later assigned to JM/WAVE in Miami.  He commanded the ‘Barbara J’ support vessel at the Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961.  He was one of only two U.S. personnel (along with Grayston Lynch ) to be directly involved in the invasion.  During the mid 1960's he led a band of Cuban Exiles that supported Col. Mike Hoare's operations in the Congo against Che Guevara who had Cuban soldiers, Simba Rebels and Soviet Forces at his disposal.  The Congo Operation was under full support and backing of the CIA.as later confirmed in the Presidential Daily Briefing (PDB). Later Rip served in Laos in the late 1960's and left there and returned to the U.S.A. in 1970 under an emergency leave due to Malaria and died from the effects shortly after in Dallas, TX.

Table F. – CIA Contracted Assets:

1.f. John ‘Jack’ Adrian O'Hare; The Invisible Man’ who supplied training, materials and intelligence to CIA assets.  He also was highly involved in super secret operations such as in the Chilean Overthrow, domestic clandestine intelligence and counterintelligence operations.  Worked directly with Grayston Lynch , among others, in a super secret role as the invisible link between CIA Shadow Warriors and other Dark Warrior's.  Basically as the direct go between with CIAOld Boy Network’ and Contracted CIA assets.

2.f. Col. Mike ‘Mad Dog’ Hoare; Mike had a checkered role as a Mercenary and commanded both 4 and 5 Commando (later 10 Commando).  His most famous mission, fully backed by CIA and mentioned in the PDB, was the Congo Affair.  The Presidential Daily Briefing (PDB) read only by President Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) mentions his activities in the Congo and his successful suppression of Communist threats.  Mike's unit was equipped and directly supported with CIA supplied materials, water borne support and land based support units (such as Rip Robertson ) and his band of Cuban Exiles).  The Congo Operation was a direct response to Che Guevara's attempts to spread Communism to Africa, especially the Congo area.  Mike resided full time in the African continent during these operations, and called Africa his home.

Table G. – Other CIA Assets Not Clearly Defined:

1.g. Mitchell ‘Mitch’ WerBell III; Served in the OSS in China during WWII.  Was a Mercenary and international Arms Dealer.  Also reported to supply weapons and silencers for the CIA.

2.g. Gerald Patrick Gerry’ Hemming; A former U.S. Marine who was in Cuba pre-Castro to give assistance.  Formed ‘InterPen’ (Intercontinental Penetration Force) and trained Cuban exiles on ‘No Name Key’ in the Florida Keys.  Later was the Technical Adviser for the Oliver Stone movie ‘J.F.K..
